As the sun dipped toward the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, I had the pleasure of photographing an extraordinary senior, Kylie. This remarkable young woman is not just a talented dancer; she’s also a STEM superstar, planning to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering with aspirations to integrate her knowledge into physical therapy. It was an honor to encapsulate her vibrant spirit and future in her senior portraits.
Kylie came prepared, armed with a Pinterest board that showcased her vision perfectly. She envisioned a blend of beautifully manicured garden backgrounds featuring bright yellow flowers, complemented by rustic prairie grasses. This thoughtful approach helped streamline our planning, ensuring the session would reflect her personality and dreams.
With her ideas in mind, I set out to scout the perfect locations. The Arboretum offered an ideal backdrop: a stunning array of sunflowers, wildflowers, and meadows—perfect for capturing that golden hour light that makes everything pop. The early morning or late afternoon sun is a photographer’s best friend, wrapping subjects in a soft glow and creating a magical atmosphere that simply can't be replicated at any other time of day.
During our shoot, we shared laughs, dodged a few pesky geese, and even managed to sneak in some dance moves. Kylie’s enthusiasm was infectious; her love for dance shone through, allowing her to pose gracefully while conveying her passion. As a photographer, it’s my job to guide my clients in finding their best angles, but with someone as natural and expressive as Kylie, it felt more like dancing alongside her.
From scouting the perfect settings to harnessing that exquisite golden light, every detail was meticulously crafted to ensure a memorable experience. My goal is always to highlight the individuality of each senior, allowing their unique personality to take center stage. For Kylie, it was about showcasing not just her achievements in dance and academics but also her vision for the future—a future filled with potential and promise.
As we wrapped up our session, I couldn’t help but feel excited about what lies ahead for Kylie. With her passion for engineering and healing, I have no doubt she will leave a significant mark on the world. Just as those yellow flowers symbolize joy and positivity, I can’t wait to see how she blossoms in the next chapter of her life.
